Last time we chatted I was telling you about the challenges I’ve had with housing.
Thankfully I’ve gotten all of that sorted out and I’m living quite comfortably during my last week here in Chiangmai.
After pulling a few strands of my hair out and questioning this entire lifestyle….in true Tali fashion I came up with a plan.
One avenue that I hadn’t dabbled in that I’d always wanted to, was teaching English on-line. I’d completed my TEFL months before and had even been accepted to start the hiring process with a reputable company, several months ago.
There are a few reasons this recently rose to the top of my list of priorities.
- I needed to know that when business wasn’t flourishing I had something sure to fall back on.
- I needed to know that when a living situation didn’t work out I had something more than savings to catch me and that it wouldn’t be so scary or heartbreaking if I needed to front some cash to get myself out of a bad situation.
- I’d been procrastinating long enough. I wanted this anyway. Now was a better time than ever.
- I needed to seriously test this out so that I could authentically offer it as an option to my readers.
Well you guys I can officially say that I’m now an On-line ESL Teacher for VIP Kid.
Just call me “Teacher Tali” 🙂
I love, love, love everything about all of it.
To keep things simple below is a list of the perks and benefits of teaching online for VIP Kids.
- Set your own hours, that’s right. You decide when you want to work and how much you want to work.
- Work from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection, well there are a few restrictions when it comes to location.
From the VIP Kid website: Even though our platform enables remote work, it is only stable in a few parts of the world. As of now, we can only work with teachers who are located in the USA (including Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, East and Southeast Asia. As soon as we are able to have a more stable connection in other parts of the world, we will update this FAQ.
- There’s no lesson planning, they give you the plan and digital platform to work from. All you need is your laptop and a headset.
- The company is always offering perks and bonuses.
- They offer incentives for recruiting other teachers.
- The kids are so cute and fun to work with.
- Teaching is genuinely rewarding and engaging, the time flies by.
In order to teach for VIP Kid you need to have a 4 year Degree in any subject, and teaching experience of some kind. It is also helpful to have a TEFL or TESOL Certificate.
In my research it appears that if you hold a certificate, it helps to receive a higher rate of pay at the time you enter the program.
Pay is anywhere between roughly $16 and $25 per hour. Some teachers may make $500 per month while others are making upwards of $3,000 per month or even more. It’s all about how much time and effort you put into the job.
WARNING:While they give us our lesson plans, this doesn’t mean that we just sit down 10 minutes before class and teach from the screen. VIP Kid sets a high standard and the current teaching community brings their “A Game” to the classroom.
Meaning that props and materials as well as a creative and upbeat spin to the classes is very much a necessity.
I also have to tell you that the application process is not a breeze by any means. You have to show VIP Kid that you really want this job.
To be honest, I had to truly take a few days and focus, as I knew that I wanted to get a job offer the first time I tried.
I didn’t want to have to wait another 3 months to have to start over and try again.
Below is a step by step timeline to give you a clear idea of the hiring process.
Step 1: Apply (Please change your resume to reflect your teaching experience and have the wording placed where they easily skim through and find it. This can be substitute teaching, tutoring, facilitation at an after-school center, etc.)
Step 2: Mock 1 and brief interview– You will sit with someone from the Corporate Office in China who will ask you about your teaching experience and why you want to work for VIP Kid, they will then pretend to be a 5 year old and you will pretend to teach them the lesson. You will have the lesson in advance and it is wise to show that you are prepared and use props.
If you sign up today with me as your referral, I will walk you through the process step by step and even practice with you beforehand.
Remember, this is a great deal of work. You really want to hit them with your best shot the 1st time.
Step 3: You get an offer (sort of). I say sort of because at this time you are either told no thank you or you are told that you are hired and sent a contract as well as the determination regarding your starting pay.
The thing is this doesn’t truly mean that you are hired. It just means you can move on to the next step and if you are in fact hired that will be your contract and official rate of pay. This is why Mock 1 is so important. You want to be sure to shine so that you can maximize your coins.
On very rare occasions some people have actually been hired after taking this step only, but this is rare.
Step 4: Take an on-line quiz. This is typically a breeze, and you are allowed to take it several times until you get it right.
Step 5: Mock 2– This time around you speak to a Native English speaking teacher who has been with the company for a while.
They will pretend to be a 5 year old for the first half of the interview where you will be pretending to teach them a lesson. Again, have your props on deck and bring your A game.
You will then complete the interview by pretending to teach a student on a higher level which are typically older students.
Step 6: You get an offer or you are told to try again in 3 months.
Step 7: Upload your picture id, copy of degree and teacher bio as well as a few headshots and an intro video that the parents will use to select you.
I know that it sounds like a tedious process and it is, but it’s so worth it in the end.I’m in my 2nd week and I’m loving going out and buying and making all the cool props.
The classes are so fun that the time just flies by and the money is legitimately good, considering the fact that it’s part-time, stress free work and I log-in when I want to and where I want to.
Keep in mind that you will probably have to work odd hours, depending on where you are based. The children you will be teaching all live in China.
If you meet the qualifications to work for VIP Kid and you are interested, please sign up with my referral code and let’s get together so that I can coach you to the finish line.
