As the tuk tuk driver drove me through Ella, and then outside of Ella, I thought to myself, “Where is he going and why so far away from the popular town that I’ve heard so much about?”
I was on my way to Wellawaya, an up and coming town in Sri Lanka, and it didn’t take me long to discover why.
Jetwing Kaduruketha provides the most unique experience when it comes to location. The 25 private dwellings sit amidst paddy farmland and natural forests. I have never felt more secluded and off the beaten path. This is an experience that many will never even be able to fathom, and anyone who does should consider themselves lucky.
With this property being centrally located, it’s the perfect location to get your bearings while you plan out your journey around the beautiful country that is Sri Lanka.
Per the property website, Jetwing Kaduruketha is located at a distance of approximately 218 km east of the capital city of Colombo. Wellawaya can be reached in a little over four hours by taking the route along the High Level Road. The town is the meeting place of roads which lead to the well known hill country destinations of Ella, Bandarawela and Badulla, and to the popular towns of Tissamaharama in the South, and Pottuvil on the Eastern coast. Close proximity to the national parks of Yala, Bundala and Uda Walawe, makes it a convenient base from which to set off on wild life safaris.
Its also perfect for just getting away and spending some time with yourself and nature.
I will never forget the sounds that greeted me each morning, or those that rocked me to bed at night. There was something dreamlike about having these very organic sounds surround me, and being able to open my front door and see the most spectacular view of rice fields and mountains.
One thing that made this property stand out for me, was the sense of community that the staff created. By the time I left there I felt as though I was moving out of a neighborhood with staff that I’d grown attached to and neighbors that I would miss dearly.
Perhaps there was something about the seclusion that made people gravitate toward one another, wanting to know more about each other.
There was also the fact that the property offered small meetups throughout my stay.
My first experience was early morning bird watching. I have personally never had an interest in bird watching prior to this, so I was in for a treat.
The walk around the property was beautiful in itself. Having a very knowledgable and kind tour guide, made it worth my while, as I had to wake up pretty early to participate in this little adventure.
The walk lasted about an hour and we were able to see several different varieties of birds.
The thing that shocked me the most was learning that the peacocks that would often times roam around the property, would fly way up to the tops of trees in the morning to dry their tails and they would fly back down, most of the time before the rest of the World was awake, to prance around in true Peacock fashion.
Who knew? I asked the tour guide over and over again if I was seeing things, and if I was the only one that was completely shocked that peacocks actually flew and flew so high?
Then at night there is a nocturnal tour, where we took a similar walk through this jungle environment at night. I believe that being in a foreign country at night, in a jungle with a few flash lights, while looking for wild animals with eyes that glow, would cause any group of people to bond. This was an experience of a lifetime, and I made a few friends along the way. Finally, I was lucky enough to be there during a celebratory tea party. Again, this was an opportunity to bond with others over delicious tea and tasty hor d’oeuvres, with the beautiful sounds and sights of nature as our backdrop. My experience on this property is one that I will not soon forget. The vision behind this hidden treasure is one to be admired. From the architecture, to the landscape, to the beautiful natural surroundings and sounds, to the delicious food and drinks and the most warm and nurturing staff.
Jetwing Kaduruketha is certainly a property to write home about.
If you find yourself in Sri Lanka, wanting to experience something unique and centrally located, I highly recommend this property.
Be sure to tell them that I sent you, and come back and let me know how much you loved it too.
