So I couldn’t believe it. I literally couldn’t believe it as I gazed at the building from the back of an old, beat up tuk tuk.
I was finally there, me, little ole’ me, who once only dreamed of seeing this place from the confinement of my home in Plano, TX. I was in Bangkok, Thailand about to walk through the doors of THE Unicorn Café.
I slowly walked through the door with a silly smile on my face to discover a beautiful young Woman in a long, sheer white dress, taking photos of herself with a tripod.
“Dammit, why didn’t I think of that?….sigh….I’m such a rookie. I bet she has thousands or maybe even millions of followers.”
All of these thoughts rushed through my head as I looked around the pastel, multi-colored, café.
After suffering a bit from blogger envy, I had to shake myself, it was one of those surreal moments where I had to just pause, take a deep breath and take it all in.
I know you’re thinking, it’s just a café Woman, chill out; but it meant so much more than that for me. I’d actually found myself in a place that I knew would take great effort to get to. I was reminded that the plan was working and that more and more of my dreams were coming true day by day. If I could cross this off my Bucket List, the possibilities were now endless.
I’d heard it all about this café, from those that boast about how magical it is, to those that feel it lacks luster and doesn’t live up to the hype.
Well, I wanted to put my 2 baht in on this topic and tell you my honest opinion regarding this tiny, yet whimsical café.
The Unicorn Café not only lived up to its high standards, it exceeded my expectations.
I can honestly say I’ve never had so much fun in a café.
It made me feel like such a “Girl”, my inner child totally came out. The pink, purple and gold sofas with rhinestone button and the crystal chandeliers, just scream “Girly”. The cute little Unicorns all over the place would make anyone want to “play”.
Yes, I agree the place is much smaller than it appears in photos, but it delivers all that it says it will, and more.
If you’ve ever heard that it looks like a Unicorn threw up in it, I’d have to agree.
After dealing with the typical Bangkok traffic and heat, I needed a pick me up, and this place delivered. I was literally smiling from ear to ear the entire time I was there.
I found myself all over the place taking photos and making friends, including the beautiful Woman in the white dress. Can you believe she wasn’t a blogger? She too just dreamed of coming to the cafe and wanted to be sure to get good photos.
While here in Thailand, I’m constantly asked if I will take photos with people, this was also the case at the Unicorn Café. Not only was I on cloud 9 due to the ambiance, I was showered with tons of compliments and a sort of celebrity treatment by several of the tourists that were there.
After bouncing around, chatting, laughing and taking photos all while soaking up the atmosphere, I decided it was time to order food.
I had very low expectations when it came to this. I figured they put their energy into the environment, and the food was probably not so good.
Well, I was wrong. Full disclosure…I’m a pescatarian so I was limited on what I could order from the menu, so my opinion on the food may not carry much weight; however, my French fries that came with 3 colorful dipping sauces were fresh, hot, salted just right and delicious.
I also had some sort of colorful soda drink. I never drink sodas and rarely any juices, but I had to try it, and again, I was pleased.
Finally, I had dessert. In my opinion, this should be the thing that people come to such a colorful place for. I ordered a waffle and ice cream concoction and I was certain that the waffles would be hard and or stale and that the ice cream would be just ok.
Um, let me just tell you I had to run away from the plate about half way through. It was sooooooooooo good. I could not believe it.
Once I playfully demanded the staff to take the remaining dessert, they prompted me to put on one of the infamous onesies.
Let me just tell ya, I had no intentions of putting on a onesie. Much like I’d heard negative things about the place and the food, I’d also heard that the onesies were filthy and smelly.
Well, after the staff insisted, I decided that it wouldn’t hurt to took a look. I don’t know if I caught them the day after wash day or what, but the onesies were very clean and also fresh, yes, I gave them a sniff test.
BTW, I’ve also heard complaints about the stuffed unicorns being dirty…again, this wasn’t my experience. Not only were the unicorns placed all around the place extremely clean, they had a large supply of new stuffed unicorns ready to put out for their customer’s enjoyment.
I genuinely loved this place and give it a 5 out of 5 rating easily.
I will say that as I sat there for about an hour and a half total, the crowd began to grow and space became very limited. I even gave up my seat for a group of four, as I knew that I could just squeeze in elsewhere being that I was alone.
Myself and the beautiful Woman in the white dress talked about how happy we were that we got there early and had a chance to get our photos.
We watched people walk in one by one with looks of disappointment. I understood as they could barely find a seat in the place.
I’m sure they couldn’t see the beauty and magic that we were able to see, and sadly, they couldn’t get their epic Instagram pics like the ones I’m sure they’ve seen floating around the internet.
My heart went out to them and wanted to tell them all that Unicorn Cafe really is a wonderful place, just not so much when so many people begin to pile in.
Several people walked in and just walked right back out. All I could think was, what a shame.
If I had to offer a bit of feedback to Unicorn Café, I’d say expand in size and accept credit cards rather than cash only. Other than that, this place has my heart.
If I had to give advice to a reader that aspires to go there, I’d say, GET THERE EARLY!!
I promise you that if you can practically have this place to yourself, it is a real gem.
The smile on my face in my photos at the café is very genuine and I give you my word that it DOES live up the hype, if done right.
Have you ever been to the Unicorn Café? What were your thoughts? Do you dream of going someday? Be sure to let me know when you make it.
